Burns (history, Clemson U.) examines the relationship between cinema and society in colonial Africa, with a particular focus on the colonial settler state of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He discusses several aspects including production, distribution, censorship, and audience reception. He analyzes seventy years of public discussion regarding the appropriate role of cinema in colonial society, the attempt by the colonial state to use film as an instrument of social and cultural hegemony, and ways in which the state lost its control over the medium. Source material for the study included official and unofficial written documents and scores of films at the National Archives in Harare, as well as interviews with both black and white filmmakers and African audience members. "This is the compelling autobiographical story of an Australian army officer attached to an American special forces unit on the Cambodian border in the Vietnam war. For the men in Stan Krasnoff's unit, life entailed sleep deprivation, bad rations, and the forging of a brotherhood. For the Special Forces gathered together to conduct a daring series of covert intelligence-gathering operations for the U.S. government, every day posed the threat of being killed—or worse, being taken prisoner. This is the story of a select group of men who, under the command of Major Bo Gritz, lived life on the razor's edge and faced the enemy up close and personal."

Two-time Academy Award winner Sir David Lean (1908–1991) was one of the most prominent directors of the twentieth century, responsible for the classics The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Doctor Zhivago (1965). British-born Lean asserted himself in Hollywood as a major filmmaker with his epic storytelling and panoramic visions of history, but he started out as a talented film editor and director in Great Britain. As a result, he brought an art-house mentality to blockbuster films. Combining elements of biography and film criticism, Beyond the Epic: The Life and Films of David Lean uses screenplays and production histories to assess Lean’s body of work. Author Gene D. Phillips interviews actors who worked with Lean and directors who knew him, and their comments reveal new details about the director’s life and career. Phillips also explores Lean’s lesser-studied films, such as The Passionate Friends (1949), Hobson’s Choice (1954), and Summertime (1955). The result is an in-depth examination of the director in cultural, historical, and cinematic contexts. Lean’s approach to filmmaking was far different than that of many of his contemporaries. He chose his films carefully and, as a result, directed only sixteen films in a period of more than forty years. Those films, however, have become some of the landmarks of motion-picture history. Lean is best known for his epics, but Phillips also focuses on Lean’s successful adaptations of famous works of literature, including retellings of plays such as Brief Encounter (1945) and novels such as Great Expectations (1946), Oliver Twist (1948), and A Passage to India (1984). From expansive studies of war and strife to some of literature’s greatest high comedies and domestic dramas, Lean imbued all of his films with his unique creative vision. Few directors can match Lean’s ability to combine narrative sweep and psychological detail, and Phillips goes beyond Lean’s epics to reveal this unifying characteristic in the director’s body of work. Beyond the Epic is a vital assessment of a great director’s artistic process and his place in the film industry.

Justice Kasric's world is turned upside down when her father forcibly bundles the entire family into carriages in the middle of the night and carts them off to a strange mansion on the outskirts of London. The Faerie are invading-and the Kasric siblings don't even have a chance to stay neutral, because different members of their family are working for opposite sides. But Justice isn't your average fifteen-year-old girl growing up in Victorian London. She's an irrepressible scoundrel, and she always has a plan. These qualities have ostracized her from the rest of the family before now, but even her older siblings look to her to help them escape. Justice certainly isn't going to stay locked up once she discovers the world of Faerie, especially once she and her siblings discover magical talents they never knew they had.

Kaia yearns to escape her horrific orphanage, to discover who her parents were, and to understand why she can sense shadows when others cannot. Yet the streets of London are as brutal as the orphanage, and for Kaia, there is no easy way out. When Kaia, arrested, faces an even worse punishment, Detective Pinsley, 45, notices a strange marking on her arm and thinks she might be the key in solving a peculiar, mysterious case. Bodies are turning up dead in London, and Pinsley wonders whether it’s the work of a deranged serial killer, or of something….else. The methods of murder seem impossible, as does the murderer’s ability to escape death. Kaia is given a choice: help solve the case, or be shipped off to Bedlam, the notorious insane asylum. Kaia and Pinsley embark to scour the dark corners and cobblestone streets of 19th century London in search of clues. Yet what they find may shock and horrify even them. Anna, a German mill-owner’s daughter, marries a French aristocrat and moves to France. She discovers that her husband killed his previous wife and that he is trying to kill her as well. Quick, intriguing, and with an extremely interesting plot, ‘The Grey Woman’ (1861) is a short story by Elizabeth Gaskell for anyone who enjoys a good gothic shudder. Incredibly progressive for its time, it is about the survival of the ill-treated woman who has decided that enough is enough. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865) was an English novelist, short story writer, and biographer, best known for her novels ‘North and South’ and ‘Wives and Daughters’ as well as her biography of Charlotte Brontë. Gaskell was viewed as a minor author until the 1950s where it became evident that her depiction of industrial environments and social problems was brilliant and poignant.

When opportunists with criminal purposes worm their way into the power structure of a large school system, compromise law enforcement, and gain access to all that tax money, “education” takes on a whole new meaning. As events escalate, ugly acts of violence, disguised as accidents, are inflicted upon those who “get in the way.” When Ben Kelly, a man on shaky emotional underpinnings, raises questions, he finds himself a target by people who will stop at nothing to carry out their felonious schemes. His unique path through hard circumstances down a perilous road of action provides the drive for what happens to him and those around him. In The Annunaki Woman, Rena, station chief of an interstellar craft, carries out her orders to attempt capture of a human with unusual DNA components. All hell breaks loose. She is stunned when her subject, Ben Kelly, and two companions react with deadly force and annihilate her team. More deadly events transpire and Rena is forced into tough decisions which throw her into conflict with her own people. Her problems are complicated by manifestations of Earth’s development of The Singularity, the intrusion of ancient races, and entities guarding old secrets emerging to engage her. Rena and Kelly are thrown together to survive. The action roars out of New Orleans into Arkansas and to other places farther north and then on to other very different places very far away.

Simon de Montfort was a man ahead of his time in the thirteenth century, a disinherited Frenchman who talked his way into an English earldom and marriage with a sister of the English king, Henry III. A charismatic, obstinate leader, Simon soon lost patience with the king's incompetence and inability to keep his word, and found himself the champion of the common people. This is his story, and the story of Henry III, as weak and changeable as Simon was brash and unbending. It is a tale of opposing wills that would eventually clash in a storm of violence and betrayal—an irresistible saga that brings the pages of history completely, provocatively, and magnificently alive.
