Neural networks have become a well-established methodology as exempli?ed by their applications to identi?cation and control of general nonlinear and complex systems; the use of high order neural networks for modeling and learning has recently increased. Usingneuralnetworks,controlalgorithmscanbedevelopedtoberobustto uncertainties and modeling errors. The most used NN structures are Feedf- ward networks and Recurrent networks. The latter type o?ers a better suited tool to model and control of nonlinear systems. There exist di?erent training algorithms for neural networks, which, h- ever, normally encounter some technical problems such as local minima, slow learning, and high sensitivity to initial conditions, among others. As a viable alternative, new training algorithms, for example, those based on Kalman ?ltering, have been proposed. There already exists publications about trajectory tracking using neural networks; however, most of those works were developed for continuous-time systems. On the other hand, while extensive literature is available for linear discrete-timecontrolsystem,nonlineardiscrete-timecontroldesigntechniques have not been discussed to the same degree. Besides, discrete-time neural networks are better ?tted for real-time implementations.

A feed forward neural network (NN) structure having 1 hidden Iayer is embodied such that its inputs are the aircraft estimated states, and its outputs are icing parameters. The necessary training and validation set for the NN model of the iced aircraft are obtained from the simulations, which are performed for various possible icing conditions around flight conditions at ice detection time. In order to decrease noise effects on the states and to increase training performance of the NN, the estimated states by the KF are used. A suitable NN model of the iced aircraft is obtained by using system identification methods and Iearning algorithms. The Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation training algorithm is used since it is faster and more accurate in several tests. This trained NN model finds new values of the icing parameters by taking real flight data. These parameters are used for the automatic control of the aircraft that has Iost its controllability due to icing. Although aircraft dynamic matrix is changed by icing conditions, existing control algorithm uses outputs of the aircraft and constant gain. However , in this condition, the gain is not optimal anymore. Even the simulations have showed that if the aircraft continues the flight with the existing controller, there would be a catastrophe. In this work, a new controller is designed in terms of the parameters found by the trained NN model.
