English summary: In their daily lives, children, adolescents and adults encounter an abundance of interpreted history represented in different forms of media. History courses must teach students to consciously deal with these representations of history and to thus qualify them in order to critically participate in cultural history. Matthias Martens contributes to the discussion on competence in history teaching by dealing with the empirical analysis of how students deal with interpreted, illustrated history, and how their trained skills help them reconstruct those competencies. The study thus identifies the tension between a broader educational-political and educational-scientific discussion on standardization and competence orientation and their domain-specific, historical didactic expression. It presents a research context that is shaped by the discussion on the implementation of standards and the empirical research on competencies. Damit ist die Studie im Spannungsfeld zwischen einer breiteren bildungspolitischen und bildungswissenschaftlichen Diskussion um Standardisierung und Kompetenzorientierung und deren domanenspezifischer, geschichtsdidaktischer Auspragung verortet - ein Forschungskontext, der gepragt ist durch die Diskussion der Implementierung von Standards und der empirischen Erforschung von Kompetenzen. Die Arbeit versteht sich als ein Ansatz, der die bisher wenig entwickelten Verknupfungen zwischen allgemein bildungswissenschaftlicher und geschichtsdidaktischer Kompetenzdiskussion vertieft.

As educators in the United States and Europe develop national history standards for K-12 students, the question of what to do with national history canons is a subject of growing concern. Should national canons still be the foundation for the teaching of history? Do national canons develop citizenship or should they be modified to accommodate the new realities of globalization? Or should they even be discarded outright? These questions become blurred by the debates over preserving national heritages, by so-called 'history wars' or 'culture wars,' and by debates over which pedagogical frameworks to use. These canon and pedagogical debates often overlap, creating even more confusion. A misconceived “skills vs. content” debate often results. Teaching students to think chronologically and historically is not the same as teaching a national heritage or a cosmopolitan outlook. But what exactly is the difference? Policy-makers and opinion leaders often confuse the pedagogical desirability of using a ‘framework’ for studying history with their own efforts to reaffirm the centrality of national identity rooted in a vision of their nation's history as a way of inculcating citizenship and patriotism. These are the issues discussed in this volume.” Today's students are citizens of the world and must be taught to think in global, supranational terms. At the same time, the traditionalists have a point when they argue that the ideal of the nation-state is the cultural glue that has traditionally held society together, and that social cohesion depends on creating and inculcating a common national culture in the schools. From an educational perspective, the problem is how to teach chronological thinking at all. How are we to reconcile the social, political and intellectual realities of a globalizing world with the continuing need for individuals to function locally as citizens of a nation-state, who share a common past, a common culture, and a common political destiny? Is it a duty of history education to create a frame of reference, and if so, what kind of frame of reference should this be? How does frame-of-reference knowledge relate to canonical knowledge and the body of knowledge of history as a whole?

The call for science curriculum reform has been made over and over again for much of the twentieth century. Arguments have been made that the content of the curriculum is not appropriate for meeting the individual and social needs of people living in the modern world; that the curriculum has become overstuffed with topics and does not serve students especially well; and above all, that the curriculum does not generate the student learning it is expected to produce. The latest volume in a continuing series of publications from the AAAS designed to reform science education, Designs for Science Literacy presupposes that curriculum reform must be considerably more extensive and fundamental than the tinkering with individual courses and subjects that has been going on for decades. Designs deals with the critical issues involved in assembling sound instructional materials into a new, coherent K-12 whole. The book pays special attention to the need to link science-oriented studies to the arts and humanities, and also proposes how to align the curriculum with an established set of learning goals while preserving the American tradition of local responsibility for the curriculum itself.
