St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, a Caribbean island, had a large number of black tradesmen who operated their own shops in its towns. These men passed on vital technical skills to their sons and apprentices, so those colonial crafts persisted during the Danish era. A few trades have continued for over a hundred years of American rule. Two of the tradesmen featured in this book, Peter G. Thurland Sr. and Alphonso Forbes, participated as musicians in the transfer ceremony of the Danish West Indies to the United States in the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, on March 31, 1917, while one tradesman, Carlos H. McGregor, observed the event. The tradesmen documented in this publication include a blacksmith, mason, shoemaker, tailor, two goldsmiths, and two joiners. They started out as young apprentices and went on to master a trade and operate their own workshop or business. These native black men contributed to the economic, social, and political life of St. Croix through periods of prosperity and financial hardships. These tradesmen were respected by people in the community and are a vital part of the island’s history and culture.

In this collection of humorous and poignant newspaper columns written for the Baltimore Sun and The News American over the last two decades, Michael Olesker captures the essence of Baltimore—a big city with the heart of a small town. Here in the closing years of the 20th century is Baltimore, with all its unexpected triumphs, crushing troubles, idiosyncratic characters, and lively neighborhoods. Michael Olesker's Baltimore offers a front row seat at the daily skirmishes that mark the city's life. Olesker draws intimate portraits of major politicians and local celebrities, of big names like William Donald Schaefer and Kurt Schmoke, Barbara Mikulski and Bea Gaddy, Artie Donovan and Brooks Robinson, Barry Levinson and John Waters. He gives equal time to players along the fringes—Block denizens, professional gamblers, petty street hustlers—and to the generally unsung heroes who keep the city vibrant and kicking. With articles about the price neighborhoods pay over racial conflicts and about the small deals that are made to get communities through a given day, Michael Olesker's Baltimore deepens our understanding of the city's people and their resilience. Olesker is hard-edged and straightforward but also warmhearted in his portrayal of Baltimore's colorful characters and their settings. In a style that combines police-blotter with Sunday-feature writing, he tells brief stories that show why—to visitors and residents alike—Baltimore feels like home. "Baltimore is a city of tribal rituals, of neighbors sharing steamed crabs in the back yard, and downtown waitresses who call their customers Hon without worrying about any vast sociological implications, and worshipful football fans who believe the snatching of their beloved Colts was the worst kidnapping since the Lindbergh baby."—from Michael Olesker's Baltimore

The revealing and candid memoir of Australia's legendary playwright and screenwriter The definitive memoir of David Williamson, author of iconic dramas such as The Removalists, The Club, Don's Party, Emerald City and Travelling North, as well as more than fifty other plays, explores the life of the writer and the true stories and real lives that inspired his works. A powerful force in theatre since the 1970s, Williamson's plays have uniquely explored the pulse of our Australianness. After five decades of chronicling the blunders, mishaps and messes that he and his fellow Australians got themselves into, Williamson has penned his long-awaited memoir, Home Truths. It reveals the story of the man behind the work: how a childhood defined by marital discord sparked a lifelong fascination with the power of drama to explore emotional conflict; how a mechanical engineering student became our most successful playwright; the anxiety that plagued him as he crafted his plays; the joy of connecting with an audience and the enduring sting of the critics; and the great love story that defined his personal life. Fearless, candid and witty, Williamson also writes about the plethora of odd, interesting, caustic and brilliant people – actors, directors, writers, theatre critics, politicians – who have intersected with his life and work: from a young Jacki Weaver and Chris Haywood in the first Sydney production of The Removalists in 1971 to Nicole Kidman on the brink of stardom in the 1988 feature film of Emerald City and lively dinners with political powerhouse Paul Keating; and from Graham Kennedy in the 1976 film version of Don's Party through eventful overseas travels with Gareth Evans, Peter Carey and Tim Winton to a West End production of Up for Grabs starring Madonna, and the satisfaction of seeing his sons Felix and Rory tread the boards in several of his own plays. Praise for David Williamson: 'Australia's most enduringly popular social comedy writer … keenly observant and satirical.'The Sydney Morning Herald 'Williamson always keeps us engaged … his words weave a spellbinding course … testament to the power of [his] language.' The Daily Telegraph 'Our greatest dramatic entertainer' Chris Boyd, Financial Review 'His genius has been to define for us, in advance of our own recognition, the qualities which make up the Australian character' Katharine Brisbane, The Australian

A man of wisdom once said to me, "Lee; it's better to have a great story and no grammar skills than great grammar skills and no story. So I took those words to heart and sat down to tell my story, not just of good and evil but a story of hidden kindness. This is the first book in a trilogy and will be followed by, Shadows of Rage and A Prayer for O'Malley. So follow the life of a half Irish, half Italian, 30 year veteran Mobile police officer who has lost everything he holds dear to him and now has turned to alcohol and women to satisfy his longing for the answers. He lives in a world of his own and allows no one to enter without his approval and that is not easily obtained. He lives and upholds the law with wisdom and instinct and enforces it with his fist. Jake calls his successes and failures in life, 'The luck of the Irish." This book should unfold very much like a movie and that's because it was from a screenplay I had written a few years back. So sit down and enter a world that you might find very funny and very sad. Maybe in the process of reading this story you'll reevaluate your way of thinking about law enforcement and remember this, 'The most beautiful part of an oak tree is the leaves and branches, but its life comes from the ugly root.
